There he was again, working his fingers to the bones, with his traditional cup of java in his hands - Peter Jackson, giving The Hobbit fans a long-awaited production video blog. Vlog 11 to be exact, and they are as amazingly entertaining as the movies.
He informed why there was no panel from The Hobbit at the ComicCon this year. They've been working extra hard with the pickup shoots and a short reel to compensate for their absence was not possible either. The director is about perfection and he was not willing to send in anything less than awesome to the ComicCon. Ah! I would have been disappointed, had I been going to the ComicCon. I was watching the updates online, though, and it was more about The Mortal Instruments City of Bones for me this year! But anyways, PJ said the only reason for the absence was because their focus is on fixing some seriously awesome material in the second and third movies, so all's good!
The vlog was about the grand reunion of all the artists and staff workers, bliss! PJ commented that, "It's a reunion of people, props (as Thorin played guitar with his sword), and sets."
The trailers lot - where all the cast and crew trailers are parked - is a huge city in itself. They actually have a transport coordinator who works with aligning the RVs in the right order. There was makeup, costumes, and prosthetics vehicles all coming in for the big movie phenomenon. Next, we got a look into the enormous warehouses where all the construction material of the sets and the props were stowed away after the principle photography last year. That photography, I remember, gave me the shivers. So fantastic! It's unbelievable, really, how much stuff they have in there. Countless clothing racks, strung with clothes for dwarves, elves, hobbits, orcs, were being ushered back to business.
Portions of the sets were being maneuvered out. Norm Willerton, the Construction Manager informed that the sets that are coming to life in The Desolation of Smaug are Laketown, Mirkwood Forest, Dale City. These were being hauled out, assembled, spray-painted for touch-ups, and green-screened for backdrops.
I absolutely fell in love with their off-site props store were there are thousands of items including armory and architectural accents. 2,000 items of armory go in one particular scene! That place looks like my room for some reason.
The battalion of dwarves made its way into the stunts room where they got into hugs and kisses and then to fighting. You've heard of exercise? Introducing Dwarvicise! They got into their dwarf body suits (giant bellies and big butts) and were rehearsing stunts and movements. They are such a hilarious company, and the Irish accents are such a treat. They are basically getting in stunts shape because of the Battle of Five Armies that is being filmed for the third movie. Their training regimes have gotten more extensive. Nothing better than more battles. I remember how brilliant Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King turned out to be with the epic battle at Gondor.
I enjoyed the humor in the continuity issues they were having with pickup shooting. Apparently, a cast member had gained weight, and another one had had a growth spurt and had grown a quite a lot of inches tall. Goodluck, PJ, you have another fellow to cut short to dwarf size. Continuity is hard and hardest for big movies like The Hobbit. For instance, Radagast's Poo had to be the same consistency and shape as it was in The Unexpected Journey. The Casting Directors were busy looking for their extras to play elves and what not. People had moved, numbers had changed, things were chaotic at that end!
Things are in order and rolling and some bits are winding up. PJ promised another vlog at the end of pickup shooting.
WAITING!
