The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (2013) - The Next Big Thing

The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (2013) is being filmed by Sony Pictures Entertainment as the next big thing of the fantasy fiction genre. Guesses are that it would overthrow the ethos of the Twilight series in terms of magnanimity.

The movie is based on the first book of Cassandra Clare's six books series The Mortal Instruments. This is a pointer that sequels will follow. In fact, IMDB has it that the second installment of the movie series is also into pre-production.

The trailers are perfect teasers, announcing the release date to be August the 23rd this year. Fans are calling 2013 the Year of the Shadowhunter.

The plot is a traditional clash of good vs. evil and a troubled romance unfolding parallel to the story. The story is staged in New York and portrays the alternative, young adult culture.

Shadowhunters are a hybrid breed of human and angels, fighting to keep evil creatures; demons, vampires, beasts, from invading the human world. The Downworld, or Shadowworld, is in battle with the Shadowhunter world.

The Talented Young Cast of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones (2013

Cassandra Clare's novel series is staged in contemporary New York and the lead characters are young adults, that is, teenage folk. The conversational language is casual, with hints of slang. There are; however, the classical elements of traditional language retained throughout most of the book. To match the elements, the best cast has been selected!

Lilly Collins is playing Clary Fray - the female lead. She has most definitely uplifted the character in the novel. She stands out beautiful, her alternative teen image stands out very gracefully (something I had expected of Bella Swan, apologies Twilight fans).

Jamie Campbel Bower, playing Jace Wayland - the lead shadowhunter, is a cinematic brilliance for a kid his age. I have seen his majestic performance in the Camelot TV series (some episodes, because all were not modest to watch), and as the fierce; silent dangerous, Caius in the Twilight movies saga. In both, Bower has been flawless.

Kevin Zegers, playing Alec Lightwood - Jace's warrior brother-like, is the second male lead (or actor in supporting role, I am guessing). Despite his performances in the fantasy fiction genre, I have seen him in a romantic comedy. I remember watching It's A Boy Girl Thing, and being very bored with the storyline (not my genre!). Hopefully, Zeger will live the fierce image of Alec. The color of his irises put him in the right place. He has got to be fierce, with Clary that is. And, pertaining to the "bro-mance" let's see how that translates.

Jemima West, a female Shadowhunter of the clan and Alec's sister, is new to me. From the description of Isabelle's character in the novel, Jemima appears less bold but it is the acting that magnifies a character on screen. So I wait until August the 23rd.

My favorite dwarf, from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Aidan Turner is playing Luke Garroway. It would be charming to see him turn into a werewolf.

There are two other pretty strong characters i.e. of Magnus Bane and the evil villain himself - Valentine.

The Next Big Thing

I do feel that the movie is going to be the next big thing of the fantasy fiction genre because of several reasons other than the fact that it is going to start a very fanatic runes tattoo trend.

The novels are a six part series which mean six movies, The City of Ashes (a sequel) already in pre-production. That is quite a movie culture budding up. The fans are, initially, the loyal readership who has gotten faces to relate to. Additionally, as movie promotions would begin to peak, many more would be added to the TMI fandom.

There is some pretty contemporary style merchandise that is gradually going up on sale or pre-order which would keep the movie fans lured in to the big thing. Watch out for my reviews on the merchandise soon.

Until then ... happy Shadowhunting! Afterall, we all fight demons everyday.
